What do I need for my baby's layette?

Whether it’s your first baby or you’ve done this multiple times,
it’s hard to remember all the little things a baby needs.

Babies need a lot of things. And whether you’re planning ahead or scrambling to get it all together from your hospital bed, it really helps to have a handy checklist. This list includes all the things you’ll need when you come home with the newest member of the family.

  • 8 newborn footies
  • 8 onesies/undershirts
  • 3-4 hats (at least 2 should be pull-on hats for sleeping because babies sleep a lot!)
  • 1-2 warm blankets
  • 3-5 swaddle blankets
  • 6-12 burp cloths
  • 2-3 pacis (or more) and a clip if you like to always find the paci
  • 6 bibs
  • 2 bath towels
  • Washcloths
  • Outerwear: depends on season
  •

    Other:

    • Baby soap/shampoo / baby lotion
    • Baby bath
    • Car seat with base or Doona
    • Winter: Car seat bunting
    • Bassinet or porta crib and  2-3 sheets with a mattress protector
    • Baby monitor if you have a nurse or your baby is sleeping in a separate room
    • Alcohol and gauze to use until the cord falls off
    • Newborn diapers (Best to go with a reliable brand like Pampers Swaddlers for newborns as their skin is sensitive)
    • Baby wipes
    • Bottles
    • Bottle brush
    • Pump (if nursing)
    • Formula (if using)
